2000 Alpina B10 3.3

Tuning firm Alpina has always had a close relationship with BMW. Founded by Burkard Bovensiepen in Buchloe in 1965, the company is recognised as a manufacturer in Germany, with modern Alpinas bearing two chassis numbers – the original BMW VIN (struck out) and an Alpina VIN

Alpina started with modified cylinder heads and induction systems for the BMW 2002 and E21. They enjoyed great success in motorsport in the early days and later became associated with highly-developed, sporting but civilised versions of mainstream BMWs

This B10 is a great example of an Alpina version of the E39, one of the best-regarded BMWs of modern times. The 3.3-litre B10 is based on the post-2000 facelift version of the E39 and is one of the last Alpina models available in the UK with a manual gearbox

The hand-built, straight-six engine is a bespoke 3.3-litre version of the US-market iron-block six with unique Alpina cylinder head, camshafts and tuning. It produces 276 BHP at 6200 rpm and 257 ft-lbs of torque

On the road this is a quick car with an engine that seems to have no inertia at all. It’s happy at any revs in any gear but – in true straight-six fashion – it loves to rev. The drivetrain is superb, and the balance of the car infinitely predictable, but the suspension is a revelation. This is the best-damped car I’ve ever driven. It manages to combine superb ride quality with great body control and a surprising lack of roll. Unlike the BMW I drive every day, the front & rear suspension seem to be on the same page and the car rides flat without fore-aft pitching. The net result is a car that feels smaller and lighter than it is and which handles and rides better than the car it’s based on. It also goes a whole lot quicker. If I had to sum it up with a comparison, I’d say it was like a Porsche 944 with four seats, less weight, a better drivetrain and a far more charismatic engine

The car has had thorough pre-sale preparation. The tyres are the correct Michelins and all parts used have been BMW or Alpina-specific genuine items. Work done includes:

  • Full inspection by BMW specialist
  • Oil service
  • New Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres
  • Rebuilt rear suspension with all new bushes & etc
  • Full 4-wheel alignment by Wheels in Motion
  • New radiator
  • New front discs & pads
  • New brake hoses
  • Airconditioning service & regas

The B10 is one of those rare cars that combines performance and fluid handling in equal measure. It’s not a hotrod like an M3 or M5, it’s a more considered car with a broader range of abilities. Because it’s based on the E39, it’s a very useable package with four seats, a huge boot and impeccable BMW road manners combined with Alpina performance and handling brilliance

The car is in lovely, original condition with sensible mileage, an unmarked interior and paintwork remarkably free of stone chips. This is a proper, correct Alpina with great history and the reassurance of a thorough pre-sale service. It’s ready to drive away with a long MOT. The B10 number plate will stay with the car
